GEMS Summer Institute
July 14, 15, 16, 2009
8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Registration Fee: $75.00
Participate in hands-on Science and Math activities using the Great Exploration in Math and Science (GEMS) curricula. Participants will receive GEMS guides for every session taken (6 guides), and learn ways to increase your knowledge of the resources available at the California Science Center.
This institute is for teachers, parents and after school care providers who are involved in Science and Math learning experiences with children in Preschool, Elementary and Middle School, and will focus on Life, Earth and Physical Science strands. LAUSD teachers may earn 1 salary point for attending this institute. All activities are aligned with the California State Science Standards and the National Science Standards.

AIMS Summer Academy
July 21, 22, 23, 2009
8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Registration Fee: $75.00
This academy for teachers, parents and after school care providers will offers hands-on experiences with the AIMS (Activities Integrating Math and Science) series. Participate in sessions that will help build conceptual understanding and provide engaging enrichment with activities that can supplement all Math and Science programs.
Participants will receive AIMS guides for every session attended (6 guides), with strands focusing on life, earth and physical science. All activities are aligned with the California State Science Standards and the National Science Standards.

Connecting Curriculum and Technology in Science

During this course, participants will explore a variety of technology friendly experiences for the novice or the expert that will engage children as they learn Math and Science concepts. This hands-on workshop series will introduce teachers, parents and after school care providers to new and emerging technologies.

Science is not just a subject learned in school! This workshop will help participants develop the natural scientist in every child and provide hands-on activities that will stimulate curiosity and explore the role Science plays in daily life.

Science for Young Children

Science concepts are embedded in the things children do everyday! In this workshop participants will explore simple science experiments and activities that will introduce children to the scientific process and show how naturally and easily young children can learn and do science. It’s never too early to start thinking about science fair projects!
Receive materials that will stimulate the brain and promote a curiosity for learning.

Helping Children Succeed in Math and Science

Discover ways to help children succeed in Math and Science by participating in activities using everyday experiences and inexpensive materials. In this workshop, you will learn strategies that will ignite children’s interest in Math and Science, participate in research and inquiry-based activities led by educational experts, and receive materials to use in your classroom, home or after school care facility.

Fun Explorations in Science and Math
August 22, 2009
8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Registration Fee: $45.00
“Why did that happen?” “How does that work?” “What will happen if…?” Children ask questions about the world around them and are filled with curiosity and the desire to learn. This workshop will help parents, teachers and after school care providers teach children about the world using hands-on experiments with topics such as plants, air and water. Receive materials that you can use immediately with children to extend their science knowledge.

2009 Summer Inquiry Institutes
Are you interested in making your classroom more student-centered by focusing on inquiry-based experiences? Inquiry is a powerful way of learning and teaching. Immerse yourself in a week long seminar that will take you through an inquiry experience based on the powerful 5E Instructional Model.
Participants will receive materials to use in their classrooms, hear exciting keynote speakers and learn about the resources available to them at the California Science Center.

Grades K-2: August 3-7, 2009
Grades 3-5: August 10-14, 2009
Registration Fee: $125.00 (per institute)
Institute Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
LAUSD teachers may earn 1 salary point

Kresa Educator Resource Hall Open House
Throughout the year the Kresa Educator Resource Hall will host open houses where visitors can try out a variety of engaging hands-on science and mathematic activities relating to different themes. Join us to meet and network with other educators and parents in the Southern Californian community.
