Members-Only IMAX Screening: Under the Sea 3D
Thursday, March 26, 2009, 7 p.m.
IMAX Theater

Members are invited to a free screening of the new IMAX film Under Sea 3D. The film transports audiences to some of the most remote and exotic undersea locations on Earth including Southern Australia, New Guinea and others in the Indo-Pacific region. Through the magic of IMAX 3D, filmgoers will swim with some of the planet’s most mysterious and extraordinary marine creatures ever filmed. Under the Sea 3D offers a uniquely entertaining and inspirational way to explore the impact that global climate change has had on ocean wilderness. The film is directed by world-renowned underwater cinematographer, Howard Hall, and narrated by actor Jim Carrey.

As you arrive in the theater, you’ll enjoy an informal slide presentation of the new World of Ecology exhibit opening in 2010. After the film, Dr. Chuck Kopczak, Curator of Ecology, and Michael Callahan, Director of Aquatics, will provide information and answer questions about the World of Ecology exhibits and the over 150 species of live animals that will live in the galleries.

Reservations are required and will be taken on a first-received, first-reserved basis. Due to theater capacity, reservations are limited to two adults and four children (age 18 and under) per Membership. Click here to RSVP.

Eyewitness Testimony: Perception and Memory on Trial
Saturday, April 18, 2009, 1 to 3 p.m.
Loker Conference Center, 1st Floor

Eyewitness testimony is at the foundation of our judicial system. In criminal cases that lack physical evidence eyewitness testimony is often essential to securing convictions. But how accurate is it? While supporters contend that when properly used eyewitness testimony remains a dependable and indispensible judicial tool, this viewpoint is not universal. In 2007 legislation was introduced in California seeking to limit the use of eyewitness testimony based on studies that indicate eyewitness error occurs in half of all wrongful convictions.

What is the science of perception and memory that lie at the core of eyewitness testimony? Is the practice scientifically sound or inherently flawed? What are the consequences of various policy decisions?

Featured speakers will present the science behind eyewitness testimony, how we form memories, and how our perceptions influence how we remember. In this light, a panel of experts representing different viewpoints will discuss the science and policy implications of this current issue at the forefront of public concern.

Your Membercard and advance registration grants you special reserved seating. Click here for additional program information and to make your reservations.
